Caitlin McLaughlin - RHS Young Designer of the Year 2016: Nature & Nurture Garden
Working with Global Stone to find the perfect tiles for my Gold medal winning RHS Young Designer of the Year Show Garden was easy. Not only do they have a beautiful range of options but they helped me every step of the way from selecting the right tiles to installation guides and information. I selected the Petrous Porcelain Toscana Smoke tiles for my urban park design as they perfectly represented a twist on city paving, taking you from city streets and into the garden seamlessly.
As large tiles they were great options for the paths and stepping-stones as they allowed groups of people to enjoy the garden together without being short on space, and really opened up the area to give the illusion of a larger garden. Also used around the edge of the modern, shallow pond, their non-slip surface was perfect.
I wanted a very minimal design with high impact and these tiles helped me achieve that. Juxtaposing the wild naturalistic planting in the garden, the tiles balanced the space and reflected the hard landscaping of the city environment the garden was designed for.
With the garden created as part of a conservation site I didn’t want to use concrete or quarried stone, but rather something that was more environmentally conscious, and talking to Global Stone I felt assured that the sustainable process for creating these tiles, including recycling their waste water back into the creation of more tiles, linked perfectly with my garden’s take home message.
- Porcelain is a great twist on more common contemporary paving
- Modern paving works well juxtaposing naturalistic planting styles
- The different paving sizes can be used around the garden in multiple ways, not just as paving. We used narrower tiles around the pond as coping stones.
