Chelsea Flower Show Update
With less than a week to go until the 2012 Chelsea Flower Show opens to the public, we’ve been working hard to get everything in place for our ambitious garden. It’s been a bit of an climb, but we’re nearly there now and can’t wait to see the public’s response. The weather has certainly made things interesting for us, but thankfully it seems to be easing off so we’ve been able to complete most of the structural work.
The beautifully, hand-honed sandstone walls are in place now. We’ve placed our striking seats into position, which will entice visitors to sit down, relax and enjoy the view. The trees have also been planted, so it’s all starting to look like it’s supposed to. The team is very excited about tomorrow, as we’ll be creating our wild flower meadow and getting started on the planting! Take a look at what we’re including in our garden on the plant list below:

Petra - Tranquillity Set In Stone
We are proud to announce that we are returning to Chelsea Flower Show this year, having sponsored our most ambitious garden project yet. Our Essex-based firm is a specialist supplier, providing an array of beautiful hand-selected stone for those who value quality, as well as design, in their garden scheme.
Julian Wood, sales Director at Global Stone says, ‘Chelsea is a key event in the horticulturalist’s calendar, and we’ve always championed the use of quality products in garden projects at Chelsea’.
This year, we’ve joined forces again with a medal-winning garden designer and previous Writtle College lecturer, Ben Wincott. This collaboration has resulted in a truly special garden that has been named: Petra – Tranquillity set in stone. The garden offers a romantic view, discovered on emerging from a silent woodland. Visitors to the garden will be struck silent by the quiet and peaceful space, with a garden carved into the bedrock itself. This structure has taken its name from the UNESCO World Heritage Site, found in Jordan.
Visitors to the garden will appreciate the organic spaces created using soft finishes and complementary colours. The incredible contemporary additions have been seamlessly integrated into the overall design. An eye-catching pond is nestled among the wild meadow flowers, the perfect spot to relax on a British summer day. Three dramatic seats are set into the rock, allowing visitors to sink back into the meadow. These stylish additions were a must for Julian. ‘I like the idea of bringing traditional ideas together with contemporary touches. I really feel they set off the details of the garden.’
Ben Wincott says, ‘This is a fresh garden, with a brand new concept. It’s wild, but contemporary. Our reference to the ancient Petra relates to discovering something special, and unexpected when out exploring.’ Wild flower meadow planting drifts around the garden, with multi-stem trees swaying in the gentle breeze.
As the garden is carved from rock, Ben and Julian were keen to have the natural paving flow around the garden as an extension of the reference to ancient Petra. ‘We chose this paving because of its charming texture, and its ability to pull you into the garden with its curving lines leading to a small cut lawn,’ says Ben. The stone-work is currently being hand-crafted, with an impressive stone wall being honed at Chelsea just before the visitors arrive. Once complete, visitors will find it hard to resist the temptation of lying down in the wild flower meadow, with shelter from the trees and feel inspired.
