Global Stone sponsored Best in Show at the Young Gardeners of the Year 2015

Global Stone are delighted that Writtle College won Best in Show and Gold at this year’s Ideal Home Show.

Organised by TV Gardener David Domoney this annual award, in association with the Prince’s Foundation, is now in its fifth year. The award celebrates young green talent by challenging UK’s leading horticultural colleges to design and build show gardens in just four days. The theme of sustainability and tranquillity in urban spaces, had a particular focus on making the best use of excess rainwater within the designs.

Writtle College focused on a garden for a city urban space where there is high pollution. So instead of growing foodstuff they created a green space that reduces dependence on mains water and helps to clean the air. The team used Pinterest to bring together their ideas and used a huge Amenity Building at Writtle to build in advance elements of the garden so they could then be dismantled and put together like a construction kit at the Show.

The garden has a woodland feel, using specimen trees, with clean lines and slick materials including beautiful Global Stone porcelain paving imported from Italy. The space is lit with low-energy feature lighting and allows for the harvesting of rainwater into an underground tank which flows through a rainforest-style shower ready to be fed back to the plants. The water features also create a soothing sound that blocks out the city noise.

The finished gardens were judged by experts from across the gardening industry, including horticultural industry leaders, home and garden magazine editors and acclaimed garden designers. Neil Domoney, one of the judges, said: “This is the best garden we have ever had here; that’s what all the judges were saying in the judging room. It should be at Chelsea. It’s very hard to fault.”

Congratulations to all the students at Writtle College.

There is also a People’s Choice Award which will be presented to the winning college at the end of the show on 6 April. So if you are visiting Olympia don’t forget to visit and vote.
